Dave Busst - the worst injury seen on an English football pitch?
Can't think of any others that rival it. Can you?

Cisse holding his leg as it just "sagged" was pretty grim.

I suppose that would count as next season.

If I were him I'd hold off for the OS, anyway.

How come Mark Noble isn't getting a testimonial this season? he made his WHU debut in August 2004.

Think they take place after a player has served 10 or more seasons at a club. Quite a rare thing for a player these days so that might explain why we dont see many.

They earn too much now to necessitate a testimonial, well in the top divisions probably?

I would have done that too, but I can't remember at all. There were a few testimonials in those days. I can't remember any recent ones apart from Tony Carr.

No sorry. All I remember about it was standing at the back of the South Bank verbally abusing Paul Judas Allen.

I saw all our home games then, but I just can't remember the Spurs testimonial. Do you remember the score?

Little bit about Gerhard Ampofo, nicked from KUMB:

Saw the Ampofo boy break his leg at a near deserted Upton Park during an youth cup tie. Was one of the worst things I've seen at a football ground. I was in the upper tier of the old West stand and you could hear the leg snap up there. The other brother was very distressed and so were all the other players. Looking back surprised the game was not abandoned. Still makes me shudder after all these years.

Yes, think this was a Southern Junior floodlight cup final against Villa if memory serves.
I got to know both brothers reasonably well, along with a few others in that youth team.
Gerhard made a comeback and all looked good until he broke it again in training following a 'heavy' tackle from Neil Orr.
lets just say they were very unhappy with Orrs tackle but accepted that the leg clearly had a weakness.
There is a photo in Steve Bacons book along with a comment from himself that it was one of Bacons best photos or something because it caught the moment and you can see Chris leaning over him with his head in hands as he stares down at the damaged leg.
Gerhard was given a testimonial by John Lyall who promised to get a big club down, Lyall keep his word by getting Spurs in, Ampofo was doubly lucky as this was just after our best ever season 85-86 -so he ended up with a good crowd.
The testimomial was also noted for being a trial game for Stewart Robson who of course later signed.
Would a youth player without any first team appearences ever be treated that well these days?
Last I heard Gerhard moved down to Folkstone never to be seen again.

That's precisely why I've never wanted to play Sunday league football.

There are some seriously nasty people playing in those games, and medical help isn't on hand like it is in professional matches.

schmeichel made me laugh

buust was in complete agony, obviously a problem

schmeichel says it made him sick and affected him mentally

however when he throws the ball out so buust can get attention, he throwns it out for a throw in

no way is he giving a corner away !!!

professional til the end

Re: Dave Busst - the worst injury seen on an English football pitch?
Who is the coloured lad (African sounding name began with A?) who played for the youths/reserves in the early 80's?? Apparently that was a shocker....

I used to occasionally play for our work team on a Saturday if WH was not playing one game one of our lads smashed someone and broke his leg... found out the next season he had such bad complications that they amputated half way up his shin... another young lad (18 years old I think he was) got done in a tackle with a MATE (the young lad was off balance and turned just as my mate hit him)... the bloke's leg was like a race horses when it snaps... flopping everywhere... didn't help that his young girlfriend and Mum and Dad were on the sidelines... that game got abandoned... as far as I know the lad is still walking with a stick... shame as he had just started earning money out of the game

My Dad used to tell a story about seeing a player called Jack Yeomanson getting his leg shattered playing for us in the 40s..

I seem to remember Zamora getting his leg broken by now team mate Karl Henry a few years ago.

On an English football pitch?

I'd say the bloke on fire at Bradford was worse than Busst?

Reckon 96 Scousers might have a claim for the title too
